PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 4 – FOCUS ON THE LEARNER (PA4)

Assessment criteria (see coursebook pages 41-45)

Successful participant teachers can demonstrate their learning by:

a) Showing awareness of how learning styles and previous learning experiences affect learning
b) Identifying learners’ language systems, language skills and affective needs, and including concrete examples from the classroom to support this
c) Correctly using terminology relating to the description of language systems and language skills
d) Using accurate written English for activity instructions, answer keys and learning advice
e) Informing a professional reader of the context, providing a brief rational and evaluation of the worksheet
f) Using language that is clear, accurate, easy to read and appropriate to the task and audience (see section 13.2)
g) Completing the assignment as outlined here
h) Including acknowledged references to a limited number of appropriate sources and demonstrating understanding of sources

For this assignment you should choose one of the classes that you teach, provide a detailed class profile, analyse the group’s strengths and weaknesses and design a worksheet to address one of the weaknesses identified.

Part one
Write a class profile for one of the groups you are teaching at the moment. (Approximately 450 words)

Part two
Outline the Linguistic ability and needs of the group (approximately 450 words)

Part three
Design a worksheet for the group. You may find materials and adapt them or produce your own.

Write a brief rationale (approximately 100 words) which links the worksheets to one of the learners’ weaknesses identified in part two.
Write a brief summary of (i) aspects that were successful and (ii) aspects which could be presented differently or improved. (approximately 250 words)

PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENT 1 – LANGUAGE ANALYSIS (PA1):

Assessment criteria
Successful participant teachers can demonstrate their learning by:
a) analysing language correctly for teaching purposes
b) correctly using terminology relating to form, meaning and phonology
c) accessing reference materials and referencing information
d) using language that is clear, accurate, easy to read and appropriate to the task and audience (see section 14.2)
e) using language in the presentation that meets the criteria outlined in section 14.1
f) completing the assignment as outlined in the rubric


For this assignment you should research a language area which will be assigned to you. You should analyse the language yourself and then you must check in a reputable grammar reference. You should prepare the following:


Presentation
This should be a short talk on what you have learned from doing the task and should be aimed at fellow professionals (your peers), not students. You should incorporate the poster to illustrate the main points about meaning, form and phonological features. The presentation should last a maximum of 7 minutes.


A Poster
This should be a visually interesting (colours / diagrams / drawings) summary of the meaning, form and phonological features of the language area.


A Handout
This should provide a detailed analysis of the language area including:
• Contextualised examples ( sentence or longer pieces of discourse)
• Form
• Phonological features
• Meaning / use
• Other uses (if appropriate)
• Check on learners’ understanding of meaning
• Timeline (if appropriate)
• Anticipated learners’ problems
• Suggested context for presenting the language
• References you have consulted to complete the task
